Hi! Welcome to my site! Hummingbird Thyme is the place I share my love of family and friends. The way I do this is through cooking, because I truly believe the stories of our lives are intertwined with stories of our food. Food represents family. It represents culture. It is the basis and is the star of many of our memories.
I am a daughter, a sister, a mother of 3, a wife, an ex-Corporate executive, a gym rat, a cancer survivor, lover of theater and books, a foodie. All of these influence my life and my cooking.
I come from a family of home-cooked family reunions, holidays, birthdays, funerals, parties and weekday dinners. Growing up in Indiana, our Sunday dinner was always family time, and was always special. As I’ve gotten older, and with a family of my own, I realize the Sunday Dinner is a ritual we perform to reinforce the bonds of family and friends, to celebrate what has happened in our lives and enjoy the company of one another.
My friend Teresa, who also happens to be from Indiana, and I were colleagues at work when we discovered both of our loves for cooking. We began cooking together on Sundays, and as we did, realized what a special time it was for our friendship, and that cooking together is just plain FUN! We’ve cooked and eaten many unique and wonderful things, and introduced my children to the wonderful wide world of good food! What we chose to cook each time is often a reflection of other things that have happened in our lives outside the kitchen, of friends or family members of whom we are thinking, or celebrations we want to have for things minor to momentous, or sometimes just to satisfy a craving. Nearly 20 years later, we have been through so much in both of our lives, and cook together less often, but our Sunday cooking is what eventually gave birth to Hummingbird Thyme.
We are not gluten-free, fat-free, low-carb, Keto, vegan or paleo, although sometimes our dishes definitely fit into these categories. We do like to choose ingredients that are minimally processed, local, and in-season when possible. We eat our vegetables and we love them! We eat dessert (at least) once a week. We believe the foods you should eat are those you could cook yourself in your own kitchen, and it is always better when you do. And, it is often easier than you think!
Please join us in our kitchen! Enjoy!
